Soap Needed in Haiti
It’s not hard to find ourselves wondering what we can do for those who have been devastated by the earthquakes in Haiti. I was very excited when I found out that many members of the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild have already contributed hundreds of pounds of soap to the Clean Your World organization. I am looking forward to contributing my share, and hope that others will join me. Here is the info:
Dear soap maker,
A 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides much-needed soap to the third world, “Clean the World,” has asked me to mobilize the handmade soap community. The need for soap in Haiti is great.
Without hand washing, the broken sewers, plumbing, and toilets in Haiti will lead to diarrhea-related bacterial infections, which sadly effect children the most and lead to 5 million deaths annually. You can help!
All soap is rebatched by Clean the World before distribution, so you can send cold process, hot process, handmilled, melt-and-pour, even half-used bars as well as shampoo (opened or unopened) to:

The soaps do not need to be labeled in any kind of way (ingredients, type of soap, etc.). Please include a brief note with your contact information explaining that you’ve donated handmade soap and whether you’d like a receipt for your taxes.

Will they take store bought or is this only handmade? And if they do take store bought, would they like some laundry bars also?

Based on the information on the Clean the World website, they are mainly receiving donations from hotels – recycled soap and shampoo, so it does NOT have to be handmade soap. I didn’t see anything about laundry bars, though.
This definitely sounds like a good thing and I’ll see what I can do to contribute.

Soap of any kind is acceptable because Clean the World rebatches it before sending it out for distribution. Clean the World also takes shampoo.

Thank you for posting this, Amy. I never thought of it either, Muthering Heights, and I am sitting on hundreds of chunks of leftover soaps. Off they go, first thing in the am.
Is there still a need for soap? The last post on the subject was more than two years ago.
@Shayna – Clean the World is still taking donations, but I’m not sure if they are still focusing on Haiti right now. Your contribution is still appreciated!! I do have updated information about where to send your soaps here.
