Making Melon Supreme Soap
Ever wondered if you can make soap with cantaloupe? How about watermelon? Yes, you can! One of the farmers at the market where I sell my soaps gave me a cantaloupe to do just that – and another farmer gave me a watermelon! I didn’t want to make a huge batch since I’d never attempted it before, so we had plenty of melon left over to eat – bonus!
Holly Port of Lotion Bar Cafe mentioned that she had made soap with cantaloupe and watermelon last summer by using it in the lye water, so that’s what I did. I put the melon in the blender first, and tried to use as much juice as possible. I figured it would turn brown when the lye hit the juices, but it’s actually a nice rusty orange:
I didn’t want the soap to turn pumpkin colored, so I planned to add some orange and pink micas – orange for cantaloupe, pink for watermelon – plus a little bit of titanium dioxide to lighten it up. I also added some cantaloupe and watermelon fragrance to the oils before adding the lye.
Here’s the color it turned after combining the oils and lye:
I added the titanium dioxide to the entire pot, then divided out a little bit for the pink and added orange mica to the rest.
And here’s the final soap in the mold:
I’ll reveal the cut soap tomorrow! It smells pretty amazing – can’t wait!

Oh so gorgeous!! I love the color combination! Can’t wait to see the cut pictures. 🙂
Wow! That looks gorgeous! Yay for you for trying new liquids too. I always get scared that I’ll have brown soap. The orange and pink is so cute and perfect for the soap. Can’t wait to see it cut!
I’m loving the colors! Can’t wait to see it cut. =)
This is so exciting, I keep thinking about doing something like this and just haven’t yet. Love the colors and I can’t wait to see the cut bars.
FRESH !! And made locally. Good for you. Hope the color stays as lovel;y as it is now. I know when I make cuke soap it stays green so fingers crossed.
It never ceases to amaze me all the things you can add to soap! Love this idea.
Very cool Amy. fab color choices! Did you freeze the juice to use as the liquid for the lye mixture?
I’ve used papaya pulp with a touch of water but I did freeze it worried about the natural sugars.
@Pam – The juices were cold, but not frozen. Seemed to work ok!
So….do you add the liquified fruits to you water or do you add the lye directly into your liquified fruit? Do you use the fruit in place of the water??
@Teri – I used a combination of fruit juice and pulp in place of the water and added my lye directly to that.
