Free Laundry Soap Samples

All Natural Laundry Soap Sample

Did I get your attention? I’m giving away samples of my homemade laundry soap this weekend only with any paid order via Greatcakessoapworks.com! It is made with the Great Cakes Soapworks Orange Essence Lye Soap. The recipe for the laundry soap is part of the gift because I have no intention of selling pre-made laundry soap, but I believe if you try it, you will want to make it for yourself. In fact, my recipe and tutorial is posted over at The Soap Bar if you’d like to check it out!

I did a lot of math to figure out that I’m spending about 4.3 cents per load to make my own soap, and we were spending eight cents per load on the generic powder stuff full of fragrance and synthetics from Sam’s Club, so it’s well worth it for my family!

  1. Hi Amy! Love all your great posts and goodies! I’ve been making my own laundry detergent for quite some time now and am generally satisfied with it. Easy to make, cost effective, and cleans well for the majority. However, my recipe is for a liquidy-gel using borax, washing soda, choice bar soap, and a bit of fels naptha with water.

Two questions about your recipe and soap:
    1. Do you feel it would be safe/suitable for hE washers?

    2. How is it on “general dingy-ness”? I feel like my whites and light colors are getting a bit dingy with time even though I still use an oxy clean booster with each load. And I would have to confess that sometimes there can still be a bit of a sweat smell by the armpits if I don’t run the heavy soiled cycle.

Starting to wonder if my recipe is inferior . . . I would apppreciate your input! Thanks and God Bless!

  2. @Courtney – Appreciate your input and observations! Here is what I would say:
    1. I use the soap on my front loader washing machine without any problems. One day my daughter picked up the large scoop from the commercial detergent and filled it with the homemade laundry soap and we ended up with residue on that load, but didn’t notice any other adverse effects!

    2. Now that you mention it, I have noticed a bit of dinginess lately. I’m not above using the regular bleach on my whites and sometimes a bit of Biz on the colors once in awhile though. It’s still better than regularly using commercial detergent as far as I’m concerned. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I agree that the trade off is worth it! I did wonder though if your homemade soap gave better results than the fels naptha and grated ivory soap in my recipe. I also put tea tree and lavender EO in my gel for antibacterial/deodorizing properties. ๐Ÿ™‚ By the calculations my recipe yields between 4-5 gallons of laundry soap with less than $5 in ingredients per batch.

  4. Amy – for your old fashioned lye soap I see you use lard. That doesn’t bother me, we eat meat and I like to think for the animals we honor their gift by using as much of their bodies as possible. Anywho – do you superfat these bars? I’d like to whip up some of my own and didn’t know if part of the cleansing came from a “harsher” bar with less excess fats in it. Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. @Courtney – There is no superfat at all in these bars. I’ve heard that a pure coconut oil soap works just as well (0% superfat also) for those who are uncomfortable with using animal products. I’ve heard the reason is if you use excess fats, it will eventually leave residue.
